Non
scholae sed vitae discimus
(We learn not for school but for life)
The
origins of the School are somewhat obscure but according to Guy Dixon's
book '100 years of Loughton School 1889 to 1989' ''In 1878 there was
a school for boys kept by J.C. Hollaway. This was known in 1886 as Madras
House. By 1890 as Madras House School it had been taken over by William
Vincent who shortly afterwards acquired Loughton School, High Road'.
And so Loughton School came into being.
Regarding the Association the first known minutes of any meeting were
those relating to the Annual General Meeting held at Loughton School
on the 17th July 1920, although it was well known that Mr William Vincent,
from about 1904, invited former pupils to reunions at the School from
time to time. Meetings were originally held in the summer but by 1924
the Annual General Meeting was moved to November to be near Armistice
Day.
By 1937 the Association had a membership of 147 and despite the closure
of the School the present membership totals 362 and at the 79th Anniversary
Dinner held at the Old Loughtonians Hockey Club last November 100 Old
Boys sat down in the company of our President Roger Timms.
During its life the Old Boys via the Association has supported the School
and the Hockey Club financially and together with the efforts Derek
Higgins O. B. E. and the officers of the Hockey Club we are proud to
be associated with one of the leading Hockey Clubs in the country.
This year, the 80th Annual Reunion Dinner will be held at the Hockey
Club on the 12th November, and the next Summer Function will be held
on the 20th June 2004 which will take the usual form of a hockey match
between the Association and a Hockey Club eleven followed by a buffet
lunch and a good chat with old friends. Once a year the Association
publishes it magazine which is sent to all members but copies can be
obtained from the Secretary.
